The Desert Traveller is a true beast of a 4WD. This hulking behemoth of a tourer was designed for a UAE customer by Bruce Loxton of Kimberley Kampers, and took inspiration from our very own touring dream rig – Ghost.
The customer purchased a 2015 model dual cab 79 Series Land Cruiser, one of the most capable, powerful 4WD vehicles produced anywhere in the world, and it certainly didn’t stay stock for long!
The big 79’s suspension was upgraded all round, with front and rear XTR shocks, HD steering damper, HD front coil springs and 600kg constant load rear leaf springs fitted.
To squeeze more grunt out of the big diesel, a DP computer chip was fitted as well as a three-inch straight-through exhaust system, plus an Airtech snorkel and a 90L auxiliary fuel tank.
An ARB roofrack maximises storage space and it combines with a Clever Shade awning and a Kimberley Mycube rooftop tent.
A Kimberley 120 amp hour lithium battery kit joins the party as well as a MPPT 20A solar controller, two Kimberley 90W Flexible Super Solar Lights, a Kimberley hot water system, portable sink and tap, a 75L in-canopy water tank and two high-powered Narva LED lightbars. Elsewhere, a Metalink gullwing canopy also joins to the Cruiser’s chassis to ensure storage space…
Honestly, space precludes us from talking about all the other mods that have gone into this inspirational beast. Simply one of the finest touring rigs we’ve ever seen and it’s been designed, built and finished with style.
